Avoid Skin Cancer with Banana Boat Coupons

Banana Boat is a great brand that has a very large selection of sun protection products to choose from. Whether you’re looking for sun protection for you or your children, Banana Boat will have you covered. In fact, they’ll have your entire body covered in UV protection. That’s because there’s SPF protection for your skin, face and even for lips specifically. This full body protection helps to ensure that you stay completely safe in the sun.

What is even more important is that Banana Boat products offer protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. According to the definition of SPF (sun protection factor), sunscreen only has to defend against UVB rays. That is because UVB rays were thought to be the only part of the ultraviolet spectrum (minus UVC, which is absorbed by the atmosphere) that was dangerous to skin. This was thought because UVB is shorter wavelength, and therefore higher energy than UVA and would cause more damage to the skin.

However, it was soon found that UVA was also dangerous and it was not use UVB that was causing skin cancer. This led sun protection companies such as Banana Boat to rethink their formula and ensure that their sunscreen also protecting against the UVA radiation. Although there are a bunch of different chemical names that you could remember to ensure the sunscreen you are buying as UVA protection, there is an easier way. Look on the packaging before you buy for words or phrases such as “multi spectrum,” “broad spectrum” or “UVA&UVB” protection. If you find one of these, you can be confident that product is protecting against at least some UVA radiation and is keeping you safer.

Now, as of 2011 there is no mandate by the FDA for sunscreen manufacturers to post a rating on UVA protection like there is with UVB. Currently, for UVB, there is a low, medium, high and highest rating which each corresponds to a specific range of SPFs. Low is 2-14, medium is 15-29, high is 30-50, and highest is 50+ SPF. While this seems like a huge range of SPFs, it is actually much smaller in terms of protection percentages than you might think. Specifically, SPF 15 blocks 94% of all UVB rays, SPF 30 is able to protect against 97%, and 45 SPF is 98%. That is, there are diminishing returns from higher and higher SPFs. It is not that 50 SPF gives double the protection that SPF 25 does. In fact, the SPF 50 is only about 5% more protection than the 25.

Remember, all this SPF talk does not mean anything about UVA radiation. However, if the FDA does at some point institute a rating system for UVA rays, it may be similar to the SPF system we see today with UVB radiation. This would be a good thing for us, the consumers and allow us to know exactly what product is best for us without having to memorize foreign chemical ingredients or relay on the goodwill of manufacturers. But until that time comes, Banana Boat will stay as one of the key companies in the sun protection industry. Additionally, they are nearly always offering printable Banana Boat coupons for their products, allowing customers to save money on a good product that protects them from both UVA and UVB radiation.
